The Senate Assembly is on December 30, 2022 set to decide the fate of embattled Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza in a special sitting to deliberate on his impeachment by MCAs.

In a gazette notice, Senate speaker Amason Kingi said the special sitting, scheduled for 2:30pm, will follow the swearing in of newly-elected Bungoma senator David Wakoli.

“Notice is given to all Senators that I have appointed Friday, 30th December, 2022, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Ground Floor, Nairobi, commencing at 2.30 pm,” he said in the gazette notice.

Kingi went on, “In accordance with standing order 33(5) of the Senate Standing Orders, the business specified in this Notice shall be the only business before the Senate during the special sitting, following which, the Senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, 14th February, 2023, at 2.30 p.m. when the Senate shall continue with its regular sessions in accordance with the Senate Calendar. Dated the 28th December, 2022.”

Mwangaza’s fate as governor hangs in the balance after he was impeached by 67 of 69 Meru MCAs on December 14 after months of fierce confrontations between the two sides.

The 11-member Senate committee chaired by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale finished the hearing of the ouster motion at 2:00am on Thursday with the governor maintaining her innocence amid the allegations by MCAs.

In the ouster motion tabled by Abogeta West MCA and Minority Party Whip Dennis Kiogora, the MCAs wanted Kawira removed from office over alleged gross misconduct, appointment of her husband Murega Baichu to the county and allegations over the irregular dismissal of county officers.
