Suspected Al-Shabaab militia, who had disguised themselves as Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers shot and killed two people on the Lamu-Garsen road in Lamu County on Thursday morning.
According to reports, up to 10 militants had erected an illegal roadblock on the road, stopped and questioned motorists before they were accosted and repulsed by GSU officers.
The Kenyan security officers then engaged the militants in an extended fierce gun battle before the suspected al Shabaab militants managed to flee into the nearby Boni forest.
The GSU officers managed to liberate four people, including two Italian nationals, who were being held captive by the suspected militants before they were accosted and repulsed.
The Kenyan officers are pursuing the militants suspected to be from neighbouring Somalia as the bodies of the deceased were moved to Mpeketoni hospital morgue.
