Travellers headed to the lakeside city of Kisumu spent the night in the cold after being stranded in a heavy traffic jam stretching kilometres at Ahero on the busy Kisumu-Kericho highway.

Hundreds of vehicles, especially private vehicles have been caught up in the over 12 hours jam that stretches from the Ahero interchange all the way to Rabuor.

Motorists who have their families, including children in their vehicles, have been forced to spend the night in the cold without proper food as they were least prepared for such an eventuality.

Reports from the scene say overlapping motorists who have created alternative lanes have made the situation worse as they have occasioned a gridlock that has completely paralysed traffic flow on the busy road.

Motorists have taken to their social media accounts to vent their frustrations about their predicament.

Some have shifted the blame to traffic police for causing the traffic jam and failing to manage it.

One motorist claimed the police decision to inspect private vehicles on suspicion of carrying passengers caused the traffic jam.

Another reason for the traffic jam could be the ongoing road construction and the narrow bridge that goes over River Nyando.

Some reports also show that unscrupulous individuals have taken undue advantage of the predicament and are robbing the travellers.

Motorists headed to Kisumu are advised to use alternative routes that have less traffic and avoid massive traffic jam.

However, the traffic jam is also a blessing to locals who have seized the opportunity to make some quick money as they are now selling tea and mandazi to weary travellers.

Boda-boda operators have also made a kill from the incident as they are ferrying passengers from the scene to Kisumu.

Several motorists have taken to their social media to vent their frustrations, and here are some of their comments:
