Kisumu West Sub-county police have launched a serious manhunt for a suspect who attacked a traffic police officer on duty along the Kisian-Bondo Road, disarmed him and escaped with his firearm.

The Friday afternoon incident left many people puzzled as the assailant attacked in broad daylight right before other police officers who manned the roadblock at Kanyawegi.

The police report says he approached the police officer from behind while the officer was inspecting a lorry and struck his head with a rod before grabbing his AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition and scampering into a nearby bush.

One police officer tried to pursue the suspect and fired several times. Unfortunately, none of the shots caught him as he escaped unhurt.

Kisumu West sub-county Police Commander David Nyabuto led a contingent of police officers that were deployed in the area for the suspect's manhunt.

The officer who was attacked in the incident sustained head injuries and was rushed to Chulaimbo Sub-county hospital for emergency treatment.

He was later discharged after the doctors confirmed he was in stable condition.

The suspect still remains at large and the police are hoping to nab him soon.
