There was heavy traffic along the busy Mombasa Road on Friday morning following an accident at the section near Ole Sereni Hotel, on the Southern Bypass.

The accident involved a truck carrying bales of unga (flour) which overturned and spilt its contents on the road and to the road’s drainage, to the benefit of pedestrians and other road users who scrambled to secure at least a packet.

This unfortunate incident comes at a time when the country is facing economic hardship and its citizens cringing at the prices of basic commodities such as foodstuff and fuel.

A video of the incident showed people running to and from the scene to take their share of the loot.

Boda boda riders could be seen packing their motorbikes with bundles of maize flour and other motorists joined who stopped their vehicles joined them, picking a bundle and stuffing their vehicles with the loot.

The people running helter-skelter across the road to loot from the overturned truck caused a traffic snarl up as motorists had to slow down or even stop to avoid knocking them down.

The cause of the accident has not been established and the police are yet to issue a statement on the accident.

So far, no injuries have been reported from the accident.
