The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has illegalized all content containing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or sometimes questioning), and others (LGBGQ+) material in Kenya.

This is according to KFCB acting CEO Christopher Wambua, who issued the directive during an interview at a local radio station.

Wambua reiterated while classifying and rating content for local consumption, they always consider the law and noted their position has always been to restrict any content that glorifies same-sex relationships.

“As we rate and classify content, we also consider other applicable laws. If there is any content that normalizes, glorifies same-sex relationships, our position in Kenya has always been to restrict and not to broadcast, exhibit or distribute that kind of content within the borders of the country,” Wambua said.

He also noted the board has previously banned several movies locally produces that were LGBTQ+ themed.

Wambua also revealed that signed partnerships outside Kenyan boundaries exist, restricting the viewership of LGBTQ+ content within Kenya.

In 2021, KFCB banned a movie entitled I am Samuel on grounds of having an LGBTQ+ theme and that it violated Article 165 of the Penal Code which outlaws homosexuality.

Apart from that, the board also argued that the film also violated the provisions of the Films and Stage, Plays Act Capp 222 of the laws of Kenya.
