Deputy Governor Anne Kananu Mwenda has taken over the running of Nairobi County from acting Governor Benson Mutura who vacated office on Monday. 

Mutura, who has been the acting Governor since December when the Nairobi County Assembly kicked out Governor Mike Sonko, now returns to his County Assembly Speaker post.

Mwenda will ascend to the governor position as soon as she is sworn in to office, a crucial move expected later this week after the Assumption of Office Committee concludes the processes.

Speaking at the event, Mutura thanked Nairobi County employees for their support since he assumed the office in acting capacity over a fortnight ago following Sonko’s ouster.

On her part, Mwenda promised to avoid politics and instead work on delivering services to Nairobi residents, while working closely with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

The Deputy Governor said she will start the process of engaging Nairobians on the state of service delivery in the city with the intention of improving then together with the Assembly.

“I once again affirm that I will lead from the front in heeding the call of the President to radically improve provision of services in the city.

“We are alive to the needs of the people and such is critical that the early successes seen over the last few months is replicated across the city in all the sectors.”
