Deputy President-elect has told President Uhuru Kenyatta that the swearing-in of President-elect William Ruto will take place regardless of his presence or absence.

Gachagua was speaking during an interview on a local radio station where he said Uhuru’s absence will not affect the transition and handover of power in any way.

The Deputy President-elect gave the example of the United States where former president Donald Trump skipped the swearing-in ceremony of his successor Joe Biden.

Gachagua noted only the presence of the Chief Justice is required and not even the sword, which he termed ceremonial.

"What is only required during the swearing-in ceremony is the presence of the Chief Justice, it is not even that sword, that is just ceremonial," Gachagua said.

The former Mathira MP expressed his concerns with Uhuru’s prolonged silence since the presidential elections were declared and challenged him to come out and address the nation, even if he does not want to congratulate Ruto for his win.

"Even if he does not want to congratulate Ruto, he should do the honourable and send a message of peace to Kenyans," Gachagua said.

Uhuru has not been seen in public after the election day nor has he issued any statement since.
