The US embassy in Nairobi has issued a clarification of its previous security alert for its citizens in the country ahead of the Tuesday election.

The Embassy clarified the advisory on Wednesday after Kenyans raised issue with their alert.


In their initial alert, the US embassy imposed movement restriction on their personnel in the region.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy has imposed movement restrictions on personnel in Kisumu,” the notice read in part.

In the advisory, the embassy noted Kenya has periodically experienced post-election violence.

"Kenya is scheduled to hold elections on August 9, 2022. Campaigning for local and national offices is fully underway. Kenya has periodically experienced some pre-electoral violence during election cycles."

However, the US embassy updated their security alert on Wednesday, noting they have no information suggesting the security situation in Kisumu or any other part of the country has been adversely affected by election preparations.

"The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi released a routine Security Alert on August 2 in advance of next week’s Kenyan elections. Alerts of this nature to American citizens are common ahead of elections throughout the world, and the United States has no information to suggest the security situation in Kisumu, or in any other parts of Kenya, have been adversely affected by election preparations," the update read.

According to the US embassy, Kisumu hosts a significant number of U.S. Embassy personnel and is a frequent travel destination for American citizens.

"The U.S. Department of State has no greater responsibility than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas and routinely issues Security Alerts surrounding elections, health conditions, and extreme weather, ensuring U.S. citizens have information that helps inform travel plans."


With only a few days remaining before the general election, the Interior Ministry has heightened security in the country to ensure a peaceful process.
