The Kenya Kwanza Alliance presidential candidate Rigathi Gachagua surprised many Kenyans when he said he did not know the price of kerosene because he does not go to the supermarket.
Gachagua said that during the deputy presidential debate that was held on Tuesday at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA).
He was facing his opponent from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition Martha Karua when the moderator asked them if they knew the prices of basic commodities.
Gachagua aced the first section of the question when he quoted the prices of milk and bread.
"The farmer sells at Sh42 and the supermarkets; some places are Sh120 per litre, others are Sh130 depending on where it is," Gachagua said.

However, it would seem Gachagua was caught flat-footed by the question when the moderator NTV’s James Smart pressed further and asked about the price of Kerosene which is commonly used in a majority of households of low-income earners.
Much to the surprise of Kenyan ‘huslters’ whom he claims to fight for and who use the commodity, Gachagua said he did not know the price of kerosene because he does not go to the supermarket.
“I do not go to the supermarket,” he answered.
It is highly unlikely that one can find kerosene being sold in supermarkets.
Barely a week ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced he had authorized Sh16.675 billion in extra fuel subsidy to cushion Kenyans from a further increase if fuel prices.
According to the statement, diesel will continue to retail at Sh140.00, petrol at Sh159.12 and Kerosene at Sh127.94.
