The embattled British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned as the leader of the Conservative party amid an acute political meltdown in the UK and a wave of resignations.

This comes after sources intimate to 10 Downing Street hinted Johnson would announce his resignation in the day's course.


His resignation has now set the race for UK’s new prime minister in motion.

Johnson announced his resignation at No. 10 Downing Street at around midday, noting that nobody in politics was indispensable.

He also expressed his sadness at leaving a job he termed the best one in the world.

“…to you the British people I know that there will be many who are relieved but perhaps quite a few who will be disappointed and I want you to know how sad I am to give up the best job in the world,” Johnson said.

However, Johnson said he would still continue serving as the British PM until his successor was chosen in the coming weeks.

He took to his Twitter account to thank the British public for allowing him to serve them as their prime minister.

“I want to thank you, the British public, for the immense privilege of serving you as Prime Minister,” Johnson tweeted.

Johnson also assured the British public that their interests will be served as they wait for his successor

“I want you to know that from now until my successor is in place, your interests will be served and the government of the country will be carried on,” he said.


Johnson's resignation comes after he dramatically lost the support of his ministers, leading to the resignation of 50 of them who opined he must go.

His administration has been dragged down by many scandals
