The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revealed how much it costs to print a ballot paper.

A ballot paper has cost the IEBC about Sh23 to print and that is inclusive of the Value Added Tax.

The IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein on Thursday revealed the details while addressing the media at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) where he joined the IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati and other commissioners in receiving the first batch of the August election ballot papers.

Marjan said a total of 22,120,258 papers will be printed for each of the 6 elective seats in the August general election.

According to Marjan, the printing of the ballot papers will cost the taxpayer about Sh3.2 billion and that is if only there will be no amendments.

Inform Lykos, the company contracted to print the papers said it intends to print over 120 million ballots before being shipped to Kenya during the three-year contract with a budget of €28 million, which translates to about Sh3.4 billion.

“It is a three-year framework contract with a budget of 28 million euros and an estimated number of ballots in excess of 120 million,” Inform Lykos said.

The firm boasts of having the highest security standards, packaging and transportation of its products.

“The project is referring to the production of election ballots that have the highest security standards, special packaging, air transportation, as well as the traceability process to ensure safe delivery to each constituency,” the firm said.

The printing of the ballot papers happens at Inform Lykos headquarters in Athens, Greece and the firm also has a backup location in Romania.
