Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has defended president Uhuru Kenyatta from critics who are blaming him for the rising cost of living in the country.

While speaking during an interview on a local radio station, Oguna said the rising cost of living is an issue that is not unique to Kenya only, but other countries are also experiencing the same therefore, it was not fair to blame Uhuru for it.

“It is not fair to put this blame on one person, it is not the President. There is a neighbouring country where the president told citizens to expect a rise in the cost of living, they understood but here we are blaming Uhuru. It is not him, he has no individual powers,” Oguna said.

Oguna said Uhuru has no control over such events as the Russia-Ukraine war that has caused an inflation crisis.

He told off politicians from the Kenya Kwanza Alliance who have always blamed the president and the handshake Uhuru hand with Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga in 2018.

Oguna said the politicians are only riding on the handshake theory to gain political mileage and paint themselves well.

"Where is the handshake coming from? I am not a politician, but I know at this period people will say many things to praise themselves," Oguna said.

The retired colonel noted there have been many projects since the handshake that created a peaceful environment for such to be realised.

“They throw stones at the government to get praise, the truth is that since the handshake there has been peace, development, the Big Four is taking shape, the expressway is there, affordable houses are there, hospitals have been built,” he said.
