The National Police Service has issued a statement regarding the Gusii Stadium incident in which a teargas canister was discharged during an Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition rally in Kisii on Thursday.

Azimio coalition's running mate Martha Karua graced the occasion and was about to give her speech when the incident happened.

NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso issued the statement on Thursday evening.

He said the service acknowledges the incident, which caused panic among members of the public who were in attendance.

“The National Police Service Headquarters is in receipt of an incident report from Police in Kisii where a teargas canister was discharged during a public meeting graced by Hon Martha Karua who is the Azimio presidential running mate and attended by many leaders and the general public,” the statement read.

According to the statement, NPS is currently investigating the circumstances that led to the unfortunate situation.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident is a matter currently under investigation,” NPS said.

The police assured the public that stern action shall be taken against anyone found culpable for the act.

“The NPS wishes to reassure the public that firm and decisive action shall be taken on anyone found to have been responsible for the act leading to the discharge of the teargas,” NPS said.


The incident forced Karua to end the rally prematurely as her security detail whisked her away to safety.

She later reported that she was safe and was on for the next schedule on her itinerary.
