President Uhuru Kenyatta has pardoned 3908 inmates during the Madaraka Day celebrations.

Uhuru said that on the advice of the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee and in response to petitions of actors within the Justice and Legal sector has exercised his presidential prerogative to release the lucky inmates.


“In response to various petitions from actors with a Justice and legal sector and in line with our commitment to Restoration of justice and reintegration of offenders on the recommendation of the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee,” Uhuru said.

"I have, on this day, exercised, the presidential prerogative of pardon and granted a second chance to some 3908 inmates."

Uhuru advised the inmates he pardoned to be change-makers in society and to restore faith and confidence in the country’s criminal justice system.

He told them to reciprocate the generosity they have been shown with an acute sense of civic duty and service to Kenyans.


“To those that have been pardoned. Mine to you. Is that you should now be change-makers in our society and restore faith and confidence in our Criminal Justice System reciprocate the generosity that has been shown by your motherland in this act of mercy, with a high sense of civic duty, and service fellow Kenyans,” Uhuru said.
