Senator Beth Mugo has suggested that the Thika Superhighway be renamed in honour of the late, retired President Mwai Kibaki.

Mugo said that during an interview with a local television station where she said Kibaki deserves to be named after a project of the highway’s standing, which are some of his achievements.

Mugo appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to contemplate the proposal, as she said Kibaki deserved such recognition because of his legacy.

"I hope the President and those who are involved in such processes would consider it," Mugo said.

The former MP for Dagoretti revealed President Kibaki’s resistance to the idea of naming projects after him, dismissing it as an act of self-regard.

"Instead of him naming roads after himself even when we told him that he should, he refused and said no," she said.

Bungoma Senator and leader of FORD-Kenya party Moses Wetangula had also mooted the same idea as he emphasised the fact that the late President Kibaki did not welcome the idea of naming public infrastructure after his person.

Wetangula also suggested that Senator Samuel Poghisio should move the motion in the house to have some national icons named after Kibaki whom he termed a great man.

"We have many places that should be named after him. In fact, Senator Samuel Poghisio should bring a motion in this House, so that we name some national icons, one or two or three after this great man," Wetangula said.

President Kibaki passed away on Thursday, aged 90 and will be buried at his home in Othaya, Nyeri County on Friday.
