The Wiper party has cleared the former governor for Nairobi County Mike Sonko to vie for Mombasa County’s gubernatorial seat.

Wiper party’s vice chairperson elections board Agatha Solitie confirmed this on Monday and also confirmed that his name is among those that have been forwarded to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“That’s the list we have forwarded to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, and yes Sonko has presented himself as a candidate in the Mombasa Governor’s race,” Solitei said.

This pitches Sonko against the incumbent Member of Parliament for Kisauni Ali Mbogo for the party’s ticket in the primaries.

If he wins the in the party primaries, Sonko will face former Mombasa Senator Hassan Oman (UDA) and whoever will win the ODM ticket that hangs between Abdulwamad Sharif Nassir or Suleiman Shahbal, in the August election.

Sonko recently ditched the Jubilee party for the Wiper party and bounced back to the political scene after being impeached from office after he was accused of abuse of office, gross misconduct and incapacity to run the Nairobi County affairs.

Currently, Sonko is facing several criminal charges in court including assault, corruption and terror-related cases.

However, Wiper party boss Kalonzo Musyoka defended Sonko, saying he has not been charged with any crime therefore he cannot be denied a ticket.

The United States government banned Sonko and his immediate family from travelling to the US over corruption claims linked to abuse of office and bribery claims.
