President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to begin his much-anticipated campaign tour of the Mount Kenya Region to drum up support for Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

This will come after the completion of some projects and the party primaries.

According to the party’s strategists, Uhuru should hold on a little longer until Jubilee’s line-up for the August election is proper to avoid instances where he endorses any aspirants before the primaries.

The president was expected to launch offensive campaigning for Raila in the vote-rich region after the Sagana 3 meeting.

He cautioned the region against his deputy William Ruto terming him as dishonest and non-performing. Instead, he urged the people from Mt Kenya to rally behind Raila’s presidency, which is sure to safeguard their interests.

“Let’s support Mr Odinga and help him protect our interests and legacy. When this young man (Dr Ruto) toes the line in the future, we will consider him,” Uhuru said.

Sources close to the president said on Sunday that once the Jubilee party primaries are complete and Azimio la Umoja has settled on Raila’s running mate, Uhuru shall hit the campaign trail.

The Director of Elections for the Jubilee party Kanini Kega confirmed that Uhuru will hit the campaign running once various development projects are complete.

“We also want to create a level playfield for our candidates. He will commission projects as he is not just going for politics,” Kega said.

The people planning the president’s campaign itinerary would like it to double as a development tour as well.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Jubilee party, Joshua Kutuny, said Uhuru only needs 90 days to campaign for his preferred successor and should go to the ground after the primaries.

“The President only needs 90 days to campaign for his preferred successor. He should go to the ground after nominations. He will be parading the line-up. People can see how our party is gaining momentum,” Kutuny said.
