Police in Karatina are investigating an incident where three people lost Sh1.8 million to conmen who promised police jobs in the recently concluded police recruitment exercise.
The three individuals who fell victim to the con artists include Felix Kiprotich 28, Dismas Kirwa 25 and Jepng’etich Kosgei 20 who had travelled from Nairobi.
The three were under the impression that they were destined for the National Police Training College Main Campus in Kiganjo where they expected to begin their training immediately, hoping to have an illustrious career in the disciplined forces.
The trio had travelled to Nairobi with their parents to meet the unscrupulous individuals from whom they secured their alleged jobs outside Hilton Hotel.
After parting with Sh600,000 each, the trio was ushered into a Toyota Noah whose driver has strict instructions to drop them off at the police training campus.

Upon reaching Karatina, the driver of the vehicle stopped over for lunch before the party continued with the rest of their journey.
The ‘soon-to-be recruits’ took their lunch in a nearby restaurant but by the time they were finished with their lunch, the Toyota Noah was nowhere to be seen.
Their driver who looked just played surprised as they were mooted the idea that the vehicle must have been stolen.
However, one of the three unfortunate individuals smelt a rat as he did not buy the driver’s facade.
When the driver identified as Martin Nyaga realised the situation was getting volatile, he dashed in a futile attempt to escape from the wrath of the three.
He barely made it to the 30 meters mark before one of the victims caught up with him in a dramatic chase.
The spectacle attracted the attention of members of the public who also identified an abandoned Subaru car at the Thailand junction in Kerugoya.
Karatina based detectives were informed about the developments and rushed to the scene and accessed the inside of the Subaru.
The detectives recovered fake offer letters from the abandoned car.
A search is still ongoing for the Toyota Noah that varnished with the trio’s belongings.
The police have cautioned members of the public against such fraudsters purporting to offer easier means to employment in the National Police Service or any other government institution. On the same breath, police warned members of the public against bribery.
