Deputy President William Ruto enjoys the protection of more than 257 security officers at his office, official residence, homes, businesses and farms strewn across the country.

This was revealed on Wednesday by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i who appeared before the National Assembly's Committee on National Security after Ruto’s men protested the changing of his security detail.

Matiang’i, PS Karanja Kibicho and Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai appeared before the Parliamentarians following an invitation by the David Mwathi-led committee.

This comes following heat generated by Ruto’s allies after the DPs elite General Service Unit (GSU) security guards were replaced by Administration Police (AP) officers last week.

The Cabinet Secretary revealed to MPs that the DP had a total of 74 police officers deployed for his personal protection 24/7 alone under the command of the Commissioner of Police.

Matiang’i clarified that the DP’s security detail was not withdrawn but the second layer of his security was rearranged in a routine exercise and that he was notified of the changes.

He said Ruto’s presidential escort comprising 74 security personnel was not been interfered with and that only security officers attached to his official residence in Karen was changed.
