Renowned veteran journalist Hilary Boniface Ng’weno or popularly known as HBN has passed away.
Ng’weno died at his home on Wednesday following a long illness, his family has confirmed.
He was a Havard-educated Scientist who graduated with a degree in Physics before working as a reporter for the Daily Nation where he was later appointed the newspaper’s first Kenyan editor-in-chief.
Between 1975 and 1999, he was the owner and editor-in-chief of the popular Weekly Review magazine.
HBN was the founder of another daily The Nairobi Times and the first ever independent television station in Kenya STV.

He established a lustrous career in journalism that spanned over 40 years.
HBN was also known to produce documentaries among them the 15-part series, Making of a Nation and Kenya’s Darkest Hour.
He also wrote the Longman thriller Men From Pretoria, which told a story of the disappearance of a South African scientist working on a top research project.

Among his greatest achievements, was recognition for his contribution to journalism and received the Rockefeller Award in 1977
He is survived by his French wife Fleur Grandjouan Ng’weno, and two daughters Amolo Ng’weno and Bettina Ng’weno.
