A businessman based in Juja, Kiambu County has confessed to killing his former girlfriend after she refused to marry him and instead left him for another man, according to police.

Police say 38-year-old Evans Karani admitted to killing 24-year-old Catherine Nyokabi on Wednesday and dumping her body near a forest to be devoured by wild animals.

Karani, a transport operator in Ndarugo, is said to have dated Nyokabi for close to four years but their affair after he accused her of having an affair.

Sleuths say he told them he was jealous and tried to persuade her to delete a picture of her alleged lover from her mobile phone all in vain, prompting him to hatch the murder plan.

Karani, who is himself married, had initially plotted to murder Nyokabi’s alleged lover but instead opted to go for his former girlfriend to stop her from going out with any other man.

He reportedly called her on phone and invited her to a meeting to iron out their differences and they later met at Ndarugo inside his Nissan Wingroad plate number KCE 920V.

The suspect is reported to have unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide the next day, before a friend he informed about his crime alerted the police who arrested him in Githurai Kimbo.

Karani’s car was found at the scene with blood stains and towed to Juja Police Station, and police indicated the suspect had led them to where he had disposed of the murder weapons.

He expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
