Nairobi motorists have been cautioned to expect temporary road closures and traffic diversions on Thursday, as Kenya hosts the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

According to a statement issued by the National Police Service, several roads around the city will either be partially or fully closed to facilitate smooth transportation and security logistics for the ongoing continental football tournament.

Among the affected routes is Aerodrome Road, which will be completely closed between the Madaraka Roundabout and the Bunyala Roundabout.

One lane of Lang’ata Road, stretching from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout, will also be shut.

Additionally, a single lane of Mombasa Road between Lusaka and Bunyala roundabouts will be inaccessible to motorists.

The police have advised city residents and visitors to use alternative routes to avoid congestion.

For those approaching the Central Business District (CBD) from Mombasa Road, the suggested diversions are via Likoni Road - Enterprise Road near General Motors, or through the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

Travellers using Lang’ata Road en route to the CBD should reroute through Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road, entering from Mbagathi Roundabout.

Those leaving the city centre towards Thika Road, including destinations such as Ruiru, Juja and Thika Town, have been advised to opt for Limuru Road or Kiambu Road instead.

Public transport operators ferrying fans and passengers to Kasarani Stadium are required to take the designated route through Ruaraka, Baba Ndogo Road, and Ngomongo Road, arriving at the stadium via Ngomongo Roundabout.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling from Thika Road to the city centre should consider using the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road as alternative routes.

The statement noted: “NB: Avoid Thika Road unless travelling to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium.”

The National Police Service said it was working in concert with other relevant government agencies to manage the increased traffic and ensure minimal disruptions.

To support the enforcement of the temporary changes, additional police personnel have been deployed to key intersections and high-traffic points.

“The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure the free flow of traffic. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules,” the statement added.

The temporary closures are expected to ease movement for tournament participants and spectators while maintaining security and order across the capital.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys early and adhere to instructions issued by traffic officers on the ground.

As Kenya continues to play host to CHAN 2024, authorities are prioritising coordination and public safety throughout the championship period.
