The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has assured the members of the public that the fire that was reported to have erupted on Mt. Longonot did not result from volcanic activity.

The service responded to the growing concerns of the public after a fire burning at Mt. Longonot was reported on Friday.

KWS also confirmed that an emergency response team dispatched to the area on Friday morning contained the raging inferno.

“A fire outbreak on the southern side of Mt. Longonot N. Park reported on October 27, 2022, has been put out,” KWS said.

“An emergency response team dispatched to the area managed to contain and finally extinguish the inferno early this morning.”

According to the KWS statement issued via their Twitter account, the fire destroyed about 40 hectares of bushland.

KWS assured visitors and their partners that all is well at Mt. Longonot, contrary to reports on social media, suggesting there was a volcanic eruption.

“We wish to confirm to the public that there was no volcanic eruption of the mountain, as reported on some media platforms,” KWS said.

“We assure our visitors and partners that the park is safe to visit.”

Reports that Mt. Longonot was burning went viral across social media after some members of the public share videos and pictures of the mountain burning from afar.
