The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rejected Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata’s application to contest in the Murang’a gubernatorial race.


Apparently, Kang’ata’s application was rejected because his running mate Winnie Mwangi did not resign within the specified timeframe as required by the Elections Act, which requires state officers seeking elective positions to resign 6 months ahead of an election.

State officers who wanted to contest in the August 9, 2022 election were required to resign by February 9, 2022.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission sent a letter to the IEBC alerting the commission that Mwangi did not resign by the February 9, 2022 deadline.

However, Kang’ata insists that his running mate complied with the Elections Act and blamed his competitors for orchestrating the move to bar him from the August general election. 


He claims there is evidence that proves Mwangi resigned on time and promised to return to the IEBC with the proof.

"We have evidence that she resigned on time and we will be coming back tomorrow to prove it," he said.
