The Independent Electoral and Boundaries and Commission (IEBC) has rejected Safina party leader Jimi Wanjigi's application to contest for presidency in the August election.

IEBC rejected Jimi's application because of the lack of a degree certificate.

"The Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, Wafula Chebukati rejects the application by Safina Party's Presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi to be registered as a Presidential candidate for failing to provide a degree certificate," IEBC said.

The commission also cited a lack of sufficient signatures to support Wanjigi's candidature.

"The Safina Party Presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi’s application also did not meet the required minimum number of supporters as it fell short by one (1) county," the commission added.

Wanjigi presented himself to the National Returning Officer Wafula Chebukati on Monday morning at the Bomas of Kenya.

His running mate Willis Otieno, his wife Irene Nzisa and supporters accompanied Jimi to the Bomas of Kenya to present his papers to the commission.

Wanjigi's rejection has dealt a colossal blow to his first stab at the presidency.
