The Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has directed the National Police Service to provide free movement and security to all fuel transporting tankers at night for the next 72 hours.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Mutyambai through the NPS Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said the service has noted the difficulties Kenyans are facing because of the fuel shortage.

Mutyambai’s directive comes as a mitigation measure of the ongoing fuel shortage crisis in the country.

“The Inspector-General has directed police to provide free movement and escort of all fuel transport tankers during nighttime for the next 72 hours between 6 pm-6 am starting today (Thursday) till Saturday,” the statement read.

NPS has said as a law enforcement agency, it has taken cognizance of the persistent situation and joins other state actors in providing solutions to alleviate the difficulties experienced.

To that effect, the IG charged the police with providing security to all local filling stations.

“All police stations countrywide are further directed to provide security to local petrol stations within their areas with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.
