Pope Francis has now endorsed same sex civil unions.

In a film released on Wednesday, the pope stated that he felt same sex couples should be allowed to marry.

The sentiments by the head of the catholic church globally are set to elicit heated debate on the rights of gay people in the church.

The pope’s remarks are contained in a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky and depart substantially from the laws at the Vatican.

"Homosexual people have a right to be in a family," he stated in the film that premiered on Wednesday.

"They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it," the Pope added.

Pope Francis was speaking during an interview conducted for the documentary ‘Francesco,’ which opened on Wednesday at the Rome Film Festival.
