Millions of children in Kenya are reporting back to primary and secondary schools after a 10-month break owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Class 8 and Form 4 candidates had resumed in-person learning in October last year but proceeded on a short break during the Christmas holiday season.

The Ministry of Education has issued a raft of guidelines meant to tame the spread of the virus amid concerns over hurdles in achievement of social distancing by learners in Kenyan schools.

The regulations include teachers being directed to use every available space in the school vicinity, including learning under trees to ensure social distancing is achieved.

Education CS Prof George Magoha has asked parents to purchase face masks for their school-going children with the government promising to distribute masks to needy students in Kenya.

The government has at the same time urged vulnerable teachers aged over 58 and those with pre-existing conditions to work remotely or teach in open spaces to protect themselves.

This comes as President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday extended the 10pm-4am curfew until March coming as Kenya had confirmed 96,802 virus cases and 1,685 deaths by Sunday.
