Photos have emerged of a Grade 6 pupil in Shanzu, Mtwapa, reading outside at night, eliciting mixed reactions from Kenyans who saw them.

The photos were shared on Facebook by one concerned Kenyan named Emmanuel Mbaji Mruu who came across the distressing situation.

The pupil identified as Salim Khamisi from Jola Urabi Primary School was doing his homework by the roadside,  under streetlights.

Khamisi was doing his homework under the street light during the curfew hours because his parents could not afford electricity tokens.

Mruu said the boy told him his family survives on measly resources, therefore, could not afford to buy electricity tokens.

“Salim Khamisi a Grade 6 pupil from Jola Urabi primary in Shanzu Mtwapa, told me his residence has power but his parents had not paid tokens because they live from hand to mouth,” wrote Mruu.

Mruu appealed to Kenyan well-wishers to assist the boy in any way, as he seemed determined to pursue his education.

“I saw a zeal, I saw great person his him. Can we help this Brain?” he added.

Kenyans who interacted with the photos sympathised with the boy as some could identify with the situation.

Most of the well-wishers offered to chip in, as some offered alternative solar energy solutions that are considered long term.
