Homeboyz Radio’s Shaffie Weru and DJ Joe Mfalme have apologised for victim shaming a 20-year-old woman who was thrown off a building in Nairobi after rejecting his boyfriend’s sex demands.

During their The Lift Off show, Shaffie and the DJ alongside Neville Musya and G-Money where discussing how Eunice Wangari Wakimbi was thrown off Ambank House’s 12th floor by the man she met on Facebook.

The viral clip, which has since been deleted, captured the radio presenters advising women in the country on how to act towards men to avoid getting into such tricky situations.

In the clip, Shaffie is heard telling women in Kenya not to go out to drink with men to avoid being targeted, as Neville is heard laughing uncontrollably in the background.

However, in their statements issued on Friday morning, Shaffie and DJ Joe apologised to their fans and the female victim for their insensitive utterances and the harm caused.

“I realize and accept that my statements about the unfortunate incident that happened to Eunice were very insensitive and hurtful and could be interpreted by some as encouraging the already ongoing and unacceptable culture of violence against women and girls. I do not, have not and will never condone any form of violence against women and I will do my part to help put an end to it,” read a part of their almost similar apology statements.

The station has also issued an apology.

Wangari had told a Nairobi court that her Facebook boyfriend had thrown her off the 12th floor of the building in the Nairobi CBD as they shared a drink during their first date.

She told Nairobi Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu that Moses Gatama Njoroge invited her to the building where he works and he turned violent after she rejected his sexual advances.

Wangari told the court she spent two months admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after the September 13, 2020 incident after travelling from her Karura home in Kiambu County to meet Gatama.

She said her troubles started after they drunk until 7.30pm then she told him she wanted to leave but her Facebook boyfriend insisted that he wanted to spend the night with her leading to a quarrel.

It was during the argument that Gatama is said to have pushed her through a window on the 12th floor of Ambank House landing on the 9th floor and suffering serious pelvic injuries.

The man was on Thursday charged with causing grevious bodily harm to Wangari.
