KEBS bans 435 beauty products for containing ‘harmful substances’

The Kenya Bureau of Statistics (KEBS) on Tuesday released a list of 435 cosmetics brands it has banned for allegedly being contaminated with mercury and hydroquinone compounds.

KEBS says the products have not been approved by the Ministry of Health’s Pharmacy and Poisons Board for medical use and their application needs a medical doctor’s supervision.

In that regard, KEBS has prohibited the sale of the listed brands of soap, skin-lightening cream and lotion and warned of legal action against those found handling the said products.

“KEBS wishes to notify the public that the below-listed cosmetic brands are banned and therefore should not be sold. The products contain harmful substances which are hydroquinone, mercury and its compounds,” the statement read in part.

“The prohibition/ban is aimed at protecting unsuspecting consumers and discouraging dumping of these products in the Kenyan Market. Hydroquinone, Mercury, oxidizing agents and hormonal preparations are used for treating various medical conditions,” The KEBS statement added.

It went on: “They are classified as drugs and should be applied only upon the advice and direction of a medical doctor. All skincare preparations like creams, lotions, gels, soaps, etc. containing hydroquinone, steroids and hormonal preparations should be registered by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of the Ministry of Health for medical use.”

The bureau of standards warned Kenyans the long-term effects of the banned products included kidney and nervous damage, swelling, rashes, peeling or redness, fatigue, skin discolouration, bone pain, and digestive ailments.

The beauty Products KEBS certified to be fit for use by Kenyans include Mediven, Betnovate, Diprosone, Hydrocortisone, 0xy 5, 0xy 10 and Nerisone.

KEBS has urged members of the public to be vigilant and report if they see any of the banned items in shelves as the bureau steps up its crackdown targeting the said products.
