Tension is continuing to brew at the newly constructed AAR Hospital situated along Kiambu Road following massive layoffs as the health institution grapples with financial difficulties.

The hospital that opened its doors to patients on July 19, 2021 has been fighting revenue challenges and started issuing redundancy letters to junior and senior staff on Wednesday.

Trouble started after AAR Hospital failed to meet its financial projections at the ultra-modern facility prompting CEO, Dr Ken Muma, to issue the firing letters on Wednesday and Thursday.

Dr Muma, who joined the hospital from AIC Kijabe Hospital in Lari, Kiambu County, doubles up as a surgeon and is taking the heat for his managing of the already under-staffed health facility.

Patients have in the recent past been complaining over long queues at the hospital and the long time it takes for one to be attended to pointing to its staffing and operation hurdles.

Department heads whose heads have rolled at AAR include Tom Simba (Marketing), who was previously at Nairobi Hospital, Fred Mumo (IT) and Christine Muema (Procurement).

More than 20 junior employees in various departments have also been rendered jobless with many more set to receive their redundancy letters on Friday afternoon and Monday.

Tension is almost reaching boiling point at the hospital that is yet to be officially launched and it remains unclear if remaining doctors, nurses and other health workers are safe.

Questions are now being raised about whether the new hospital located in the leafy suburb of Muthaiga did not create a financial buffer zone for its operations for a few years to cushion its workers as it worked on realising its Return on Investment strategy.
