Safaricom has announced the appointment of Michael Mutiga as Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer following the retirement of Joe Ogutu last week.

Mutiga, in the appointment announced by Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa which takes effect from May 1, 2021, becomes a new Executive Committee member to fill Ogutu's position.

He will lead Safaricom’s business development and transformation and is tasked with Strategic Partnerships, Mergers and Acquisitions, funding strategy and asset optimization.

Mutiga has more than 20 years in Banking and joins the telcos from Citibank, where he was the Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa from 2019.

He has also held various senior roles locally and regionally in management and leadership.

He previously worked at Barclays/Absa Capital, and rose from a Management Associate to Regional Coverage Head – East Africa, Investment Banking Division Africa before joining Citibank in 2006.

Mutiga holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi, and Masters in Law degree from Temple University and is an Advocate and a Certified Public Secretary.
