A Nairobi resident has filed a case at the Milimani Law court seeking to have suspended the 16 per cent value added tax (VAT) on the LPG cooking gas.
The man Okumu Oscar Dindi made his case that the parliament did not engage members of the public for constructive participation which is provided for in the current constitution, especially during these times when the effects of Covid-19 pandemic are still biting Kenyans.
He also argued that imposing the VAT tax will impact negatively on the environmental conservation efforts.
Okumu also added that imposing the VAT tax will violate the fundamental rights of Kenyans to life, food, dignity, clean and conducive environment.
“By failing to engage the public prior to passing the Bill, the National Assembly did not understand and did not take into account the enormous economic and environmental challenges the said legislation posed,” read Okumu’s court documents’
