Kenyans can now sign in to their iTax accounts using their national identification numbers, following a move by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) aimed at making tax-related services more accessible and encouraging greater compliance.
Until now, access to the iTax portal has been restricted to Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), a method that, while still functional, often poses challenges for users who cannot recall their assigned tax numbers.
“While this method remains valid and operational, the introduction of the ID number as an alternative is expected to make access easier and more convenient for many users,” in a formal statement, KRA explained.
The authority added that this shift was in direct response to feedback from taxpayers who indicated a preference for using national ID numbers over PINs due to their familiarity and everyday usage.
“The decision to implement this option was driven by feedback from taxpayers who noted that ID numbers are easier to remember and more frequently used in everyday identification processes,” KRA stated.

KRA’s iTax system serves as the backbone of tax administration in Kenya, providing a digital platform through which taxpayers can file returns, settle dues, obtain compliance certificates, and manage other tax matters.
By removing one of the friction points in the login process, KRA is betting on improved user convenience to boost voluntary adherence to tax obligations.
"Enhancing access to this platform is expected to contribute significantly to KRA’s efforts to expand the tax base through voluntary compliance,” the authority stated.
The addition of ID numbers as an alternative login option marks a subtle but potentially impactful adjustment to how Kenyans interact with the national tax infrastructure.
For many, it could mean fewer delays and a smoother digital experience.
With Kenya striving to widen its tax net, such changes, though administrative on the surface, may become instrumental in achieving broader revenue collection goals.
