Instagram will start hiding potentially offensive comments automatically as it makes attempts to tackle rising online bullying.

The social media platform said it will hide comments similar to those that have been reported by Instagram users in the past.

The popular site owned by Facebook announced that it was using current artificial intelligence systems to recognise bullying or harassing language in the comments sections.

On Tuesday, Instagram announced that it would be testing the feature on the day that also commemorates the mobile app's tenth anniversary.

However, interested users will still be able to view those hidden comments by tapping "View Hidden Comments".

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri vowed to fight bullying online after the firms rolled out a "Restrict" tool which permits one to bar remarks by a particular user from being seen by others.

The app also earlier added a feature that allows a user to know when their remark may be considered offensive before they post it and Instagram said this has been significantly effective.

Instagram on Tuesday said it would add another warning for repeat offenders to reconsider their past posts or risk their comment being hidden or accounts being deleted permanently.

Twitter earlier this year started prompting its users to consider rewriting their replies to any tweet before posting to ensure it does not contain any potentially harmful language.
