Absa Bank Kenya has announced a Sh60 million sponsorship of the 2025 Magical Kenya Open (MKO) making it the largest corporate sponsor of the tournament for 14 years.

The 56th edition of the Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa is scheduled to tee off on February 20, 2025 and conclude on February 23, 2025 at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

Absa has set aside Sh40 million to support the local organising committee via Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) to successfully prepare and execute the premier golfing tournament.

The Kenyan bank has allocated the remaining Sh20 million to conduct promotional programmes and towards the creation of exclusive experiences for fans and stakeholders.

Absa Bank Kenya MD & CEO Abdi Mohamed has expressed the bank’s continuing commitment to nurturing sports as a key pillar towards economic growth in Kenya.

“Through our sponsorships, we showcase the undeniable socio-economic impact of sports,” stated Mohamed.

He added: “These initiatives boost tourism, create jobs, and invigorate local economies, illustrating our commitment to sustainable growth and community empowerment.”

He noted that, beyond golf, the influx of local and foreign attendees will boost Kenya’s hospitality and transport sectors and grow small businesses as well as local communities.

“The Magical Kenya Open showcases Kenya’s rich cultural heritage to a global audience, proving it’s always more than just golf; it’s about the stories that matter, because to us, every story matters,” he noted.

MKO is part of the DP World Tour and stages Kenya as a golfing destination and the 2025 edition will host 144 elite golfers, including eight professional and two amateur Kenyan golfers.

The pro golfers from different countries cross the globe are scheduled to face off over four exhilarating swinging rounds for a piece of the Sh322.5 million (USD 2.5 million) prize purse.

Kenyan pros set to take part in the nail-biting action include Njoroge Kibugu, Greg Snow, David Wakhu, Samuel Njoroge, Dismas Indiza, Mohit Mediratta, Riz Charania, and Edwin Mudanyi.

Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Principal Secretary, Eng Peter Tum, expressed the government’s pledge to creating an enabling environment for the growth of sports.

“Our commitment is driven by the fact that sports does not only bring us together as a nation but also enable our youth to pursue their sporting talent,” stated Eng Tum.

Tum added, “It is for this reason that the government has once again agreed to invest heavily financially in making sure that Kenya hosts the Magical Kenya Open 2025.”

On his part, Kenya Open Golf Limited chairman Peter Kanyago noted that the sport had experienced tremendous growth in Kenya in recent years due to public-private partnerships.

“We take pride in the results of our continued partnership with private sector players such as Absa, which are evidenced by the transformation of this tournament from an elitist outlook to a more inclusive family and lifestyle event,” said Kanyango.

MKO promotes Kenya as golfing destination and is regarded as one of the key sporting events in the region, with more than 500 million people worldwide watching the broadcast.

Absa also sponsors athletics via the Absa Kip Keino Classic and Sirikwa Classic championship, and is also the official banking partner for the Premier League in Africa for over a decade.
