NCBA Group has sponsored the inaugural Wangari Maathai Marathon to the tune of Sh2 million to honour the late Nobel Prize winner and environmentalist Prof Wangari Maathai.

The first Wangari Maathai Marathon themed “Power of One” is scheduled to be held at Karura Forest in Nairobi on the African Environmental Day, which falls on March 3, 2024.

NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora lauded the bank’s collaboration with the Wangari Maathai Foundation to honour Prof Maathai and her major environmental legacy.

“At NCBA, we are committed to environmental conservation. This aligns with our sustainability commitments on nature and biodiversity by demonstrating a commitment to plant and grow 10 million trees by 2030,” stated Gachora.

The programme will include a tree-planting exercise also joined by Environment, Climate Change and Forestry CS Soipan Tuya, top Kenyan athletes Eliud Kipchoge, Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, Mary Moraa, Patrick Musyoki, Tegla Loroupe among other dignitaries.

All willing participants will be allowed in the marathon featuring a 5km fun race, 2km children’s race, and 10km and 21km races with tickets available at Karura Forest the entire February.

Wangari Maathai Foundation President and CEO Njeri Kabeberi noted that the inaugural competition will honour the legacy of the great Kenyan woman and environmentalist.

“We are thankful to the sponsors, such as NCBA, who have come on board to help us realise our dream: for this marathon to be recognised on the world stage. Let today’s event be an indication of ‘The Power of One’ spirit to do more in the preservation of our planet,” said Njeri.
