A number of roads are set to be closed on Sunday October 29, 2023 as more than 21,600 participants take part in the 20th edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
Langata Road, which leads the start and finishing venue at Uhuru Gardens, is among the key roads that will be closed to other motorists on Sunday to pave way for the coveted event.
The runners will use the Southern Bypass for the physical marathon to experience the scenic view of the Nairobi National Park and the major highway will also be closed to all motorists.
The Nairobi Traffic Department has scheduled road closures and detours to redirect traffic to and from the Southern Bypass between 12:00am and 1:30pm on October 29, 2023.
Nairobi Traffic Police Commander Vitalis Otieno has assured the runners and members of the public that police will work to minimise the inconvenience to drivers and pedestrians.

“As the police traffic department, we have offered alternative routes that are to be used during this 20th edition of the Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon 2023,” said Otieno.
He added, “Even with this we want to assure the country that all alternative routes are safe and secure.”
The marathon schedule:
“We trust that the event will continue with little or no hitches. We have also ensured that the start times and finish times are well managed,” said Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon Local Organising Committee Chairman Peter Gitau.
He added: “The Race Technical Director, Route Marshals and CCTV cameras along the course will ensure delivery of a world-class marathon and experience to all participants as we celebrate our 20th year anniversary.”
A total kitty of Sh11 million awaits marathon winners in the different categories and 90 countries represented with winners in the full marathon set to receive Sh2 million each.
