The much-anticipated Safaricom Chapa Dimba football tournament is scheduled to commence its inaugural county finals in Vihiga County this weekend.

Finalists Ebwali Boys and Bunyore Assassins will clash in the Boys segment while Madira Girls will face off with the Maroon Queens on Saturday at Mumboha Stadium in Luanda.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Tournament Director Chris Amimo says the tournament will give many young people a chance to explore their talent and launch their career in football.

“We are glad to be back on the pitch and look forward to discovering new talent during this fourth season of Safaricom Chapa Dimba,” said Amimo.

He added, “Launching the county finals in the Western region was a given because of the interest shown going by the number of teams that registered to participate; almost triple the number from the third season.”

The Vihiga county finals will be proceeded by Busia, Kakamega and Bungoma County finals the weekend of August 12 and 13.

Teams that will win in the county finals will proceed to the Western regional finals slated for Bukhungu Stadium later this month after the Western region tournaments that featured 441 teams kicking off back in June at the ward level.

Kakamega County recorded the highest number of teams in Western Region at 162, followed by Bungoma County with 152, Busia County with 64 and Vihiga County with 63.

"As we now proceed to the county finals in anticipation of the regional finals, I can attest that the talent at the grassroots level is remarkable,” said Amimo.

The county finals will move to Nyanza region next before extending to other regions.

“We continue to scout some of the best talents from these grassroot games giving them a chance even if their teams do not make it to the regional and national finals,” he added.

Safaricom Chapa Dimba provides a platform for scouts and coaches to get new talents and build feeder systems for Kenyan football leagues while also training a total of 250 coaches.

The tournament targets young people aged between 16 and 20 with registration currently going on across the different regions of the country.

The Chapa Dimba football tournament group stages will be played at the grassroots level, with the teams that succeed qualifying for the regional finals across the eight regions.
