The three Kenyan FIA rally stars have exuded confidence of good finishes at this year’s World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally, which was flagged off on Thursday at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

McRae Kimathi, Hamza Anwar and Jeremiah Wahome were part of the single-car (Ford Fiesta Rally3) category of WRC3 programme and aim to beat the challenging Naivasha route course.

The much-anticipated WRC Safari Rally is scheduled to be headlined by Priority 1 World Rally Teams and WRC2 Rally Two (the former Rally5 marques) entrants.

“Once again, as a team, we are delighted to participate in this big stage rally event. It’s an amazing milestone. For three years, we have partnered together with Safaricom on this project and have grown immensely as a team,” said Hamza Anwar at the Thursday shakedown.

He added, “My car is in good condition and I hope to give my best. We promise to make Kenyans proud by posting a 1-2-3 podium clean sweep in Rally3.”

Safaricom’s mobile money transfer service, M-Pesa has pledged Sh25 million to support the WRC Safari Rally FIA rally Star Programme.

To support its sustainability efforts, Safaricom and rally stars planted trees at the Wildlife Research and Training Institute to mark the 2023 WRC Safari Rally with 7,000 trees planted.


The FIA youngsters will be taking part in the WRC Safari Rally for the third consecutive year after Jeremiah Wahome and Mc Rae Kimathi finished second and third respectively under WRC 3 category in 2022 and 30th and 32nd positions overall.

Kimathi, Anwar and Wahome are part of the FIA Rally Star programme, an international initiative seeking to identify, train and develop talented young drivers aged between 17 and 28.

This year’s Safari Rally has attracted 34 drivers, including WRC points leader and defending Safari Rally champion Kalle Rovanpera as well as 2021 WRC Safari Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier.

Others who have confirmed participation in the thrilling 2023 competition are Ott Tänak, Evans Elfyn, Thierry Neuville, Esapekka Lappi, Dani Sordo, Katsuta Takamoto and Solberg Oliver.

The other members of the team Kenya is comprised of Carl Tundo, Patel Karan, Virani Aakif, Canobbio Piero, Singh Vohra Samman, Kavisi Evans, Rathod Minesh, and Kariuki Josiah.

1. Hamza Anwar

• Participated in the BRDC British Formula 3 at the age of 18, finishing 9th.
