South Africa’s two-time DP World Tour winner Haydn Porteous will lead a field of more than 120 golfers from 16 countries at the SportsBiz Africa Golf Championship, set for September 3 to 5, 2025, at the Kigali Golf Resort & Villas.

The three-day, 54-hole event, part of the Sunshine Development Tour’s East Africa Swing, will offer a prize purse of Sh3.2 million, along with Order of Merit, Official World Golf Ranking, and World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

Porteous, who has victories at the 2016 Joburg Open, the 2017 Czech Masters, and the 2015 Barclays Kenya Open, is expected to bring high-profile attention to Kigali.

The tournament will also feature leading players from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Malawi, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Burundi, South Africa, Egypt, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

South Africa’s contingent includes Ivanna Samu, Breen Adam, Harry Konig, Slenda Sithebe, Duma Yolanda, Shawnelle de Lange, Travis Procter, and Myeji Zethu.

Rwanda will have 29 representatives led by Celestin Nsanzuwera, winner of the Johnnie Walker Classic in Diani, along with Munyaneza Olivier, Dusabe Jules, and several top amateurs.

Kenya’s squad features two-time circuit winner Njoroge Kibugu, Ruiru champion Dismas Indiza, Daniel Nduva, Rizwan Charania, Greg Snow, Mutahi Kibugu, Simon Ngige, and elite amateurs John Lejirma and Michael Karanga.

Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo, Zimbabwe’s Visitor Mapwanya, Nigeria’s Andrew Odoh, Ghana’s Ezekiel Afisco, Cameroon’s Martial Tankou Kuitchou, and Malawi’s Paul Chidale are also expected to be in contention. Canada’s Daniel Core and the United Kingdom’s Scott Davey complete the international mix.

The women’s draw includes Kenya’s Naomi Wafula, Uganda’s Irene Nakalembe, Rwanda’s Noeline Narubega, and South Africans Duma Yolanda, Myeji Zethu, and Shawnelle de Lange.

Tournament promoter Charles Gacheru said the event represents a vision of creating a regional tour that connects East African golfers to global opportunities, noting: “We are excited to be taking the Sunshine Development Tour to the Land of a Thousand Hills.” He added that with stars such as Porteous and home talent like Nsanzuwera, “we expect three days of thrilling golf in Kigali.”

SportsBiz Africa Forum lead Christian Gakwaya highlighted the tournament’s wider impact on the continent’s sports industry, stating: “Golf is not only a sport but also a driver of tourism, attracts investment, and gives our athletes global exposure.”

The championship will precede the 2025 SportsBiz Africa Forum in Rwanda, further anchoring the country’s ambitions of using sport as a tool for development while positioning East Africa on the global golfing map.
