In a historic victory, Mombasa Golf Club, proudly sponsored by NCBA Bank, captured their maiden Tannahill Shield title at the tournament’s 100th edition at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

The coastal golf club delivered a dominant performance over the Easter weekend, topping the leaderboard with an impressive 48 gross points across four fiercely contested rounds.

Their win marks a significant milestone, not only as their first Tannahill Shield title, but also in the centenary celebration of one of Kenya’s most prestigious amateur golf tournaments.

Hosted at the 119-year-old Royal Nairobi Golf Club — a par-72 gem steeped in rich history — the 2025 edition drew nine elite teams from the host Royal Nairobi as well as Mombasa, Muthaiga, Kenya Railway, Vet Lab, Sigona, Windsor, Western Kenya, and Limuru.

Mombasa set the pace early, earning 12 points in Round 1 and building on that momentum with 15 in Round 2.

Despite a slight dip with 10 in Round 3, they closed strong with 11 points in Round 4 to finish nine clear of nearest challengers, Muthaiga Golf Club, who ended with 39 points.

Led by team captain Gurbux Singh and manager Erick Nyongesa, Mombasa’s roster featured top-tier amateur talent including Adel Balala and William Odeck — both fresh off appearances at the 2025 Magical Kenya Open — alongside seasoned KAGC Series players Sammy Mulama and Henry Kamau.

Rising junior star Nathan Ngweno also made a notable contribution to the team’s success.

“This win means the world to us,” said Singh. “Not just because it’s the 100th edition, but because of what it took to get here. Every player gave it their all. This is a reflection of discipline, belief, and hard work. We’re deeply grateful to NCBA for standing by us these past three years — this trophy belongs to them just as much as it does to us.”

Muthaiga Golf Club’s solid campaign earned them second place with 5, 10, 11, and 13 points across the four rounds.

Kenya Railway and Vet Lab golf clubs shared third position on 35 points each, with Kenya Railways Golf Club posting 7, 10, 13, and 5, while Vet Lab logged 13, 3, 10, and 9 points.

Sigona and Western Kenya teams tied at 30 points apiece.

Windsor followed with 29, and defending champions Royal Nairobi — despite enjoying home advantage — settled for 8th with 26 points, while Limuru Country Club rounded off the standings with 16.

Earlier in the week, Mombasa’s senior squad set the tone for the club’s overall success, claiming top honors in their category with gross scores of 239 and 238 across two rounds for a combined 477, while Western Kenya (480) and Royal Nairobi (481) trailed closely behind.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, NCBA Bank’s Corporate Banking Director Charles Omondi praised the Mombasa team and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting sports and community development.

“This is a proud moment for NCBA,” Omondi said. “We believe in supporting platforms that build character, discipline, and unity — values that resonate deeply with our purpose. Walking with Mombasa Golf Club on this journey has been a privilege, and their success shows that great things happen when we grow together.”

As the Tannahill Shield celebrates its 100th year, Mombasa Golf Club’s victory not only rewrites history but also signals a bright future for golf talent emerging from Kenya’s coastal region.
