A section of Kenyans has expressed their outrage at the new Team Kenya uniforms to be used by Kenyan athletes in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Those opposed to the new uniforms unveiled during a meeting between the athletes and President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi termed them ugly and unfit for use by Team Kenya.

Olympics Kenya Secretary General Francis Mutuku distributed the kits to athletes destined for Tokyo, Japan after training at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani bubble training camp.

The new uniforms consist of a short-sleeved shirt with a red and green pattern all over it and features the Kenyan flag positioned at the shoulders and was designed by Nike.

The Kenyan kits feature a conspicuous honeycomb pattern, which is a break from the past ones that were dominated by the red, black and green colors of the national flag.

However, the kits for Team Kenya sponsored by Kenya Breweries received accolades even as the ones by Nike and Safaricom sponsored ones were bashed by the irate Kenyans.

Most of those who commented on the Kenya Breweries sponsored kits lauded them as the best designed with some wishing they were the main uniforms.

Some of the Kenyan athletes have already left for the pre-Olympic training camp in Kurume City with a total of 150 members of the team Kenya already having received their kits.

“I am privileged to give team Kenya their official kit and very happy that the president unveiled the kit yesterday with the Kenyan flags. We want to ensure that our athletes are well kitted as they have earned the right to wear these special colors,” said Mutuku.

The different teams are expected to conduct a two-week training session in Kurume City, Japan before heading to Tokyo for the Games slated to run from July 23 to August 8.
