The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has unveiled draft guidelines aimed at regulating the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data, and social media within the country's media industry.
These guidelines, which have been developed by a technical committee, are intended to ensure the ethical integration of these technological tools into professional journalism.
"The Media Council of Kenya (MCK), through a technical committee, has developed media guidelines on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data and social media to ensure appropriate and ethical integration for their use in professional journalism in Kenya," MCK stated.
The MCK has created four key documents: A Data Governance Guide for Media Practice in Kenya, A Media Handbook for Reporting on Artificial Intelligence in Kenya, Media Guide on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Kenya, and A Guide on the Use of Social Media and the Internet for Media Practice in Kenya.

According to the MCK, public participation is essential in shaping policies that reflect the diverse views and needs of the media industry. In line with the Constitution of Kenya, the Media Council is inviting stakeholders, the public, and all interested parties to provide feedback on the draft guidelines.
The submissions will inform the review process, ensuring the guidelines are both inclusive and relevant.
“As AI, data and social media tools continue to transform journalism, it is crucial to adopt standards that maintain journalistic integrity and uphold public trust,” the MCK stated.
The guidelines are designed to help media professionals navigate these changes while safeguarding ethical practices and professionalism in the face of rapidly advancing technology.
The Media Council has made the draft guidelines available on its official website.
Interested parties are encouraged to submit their written comments via email by Saturday.
These guidelines represent a forward-thinking response to the growing role of AI and social media in shaping the future of journalism.
