The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a stern directive requiring all motor vehicle dealers and showroom operators to register their vehicles on its online portal within the next 14 days.

Failure to comply will lead to severe repercussions, including the revocation of operating licenses and the impounding of unregistered vehicles.

NTSA Director General George Njao, addressing the matter on Friday, highlighted the gravity of the situation.

"Following the completion of the initiative, the Authority notes that several motor vehicle dealers are holding unregistered motor vehicles in their premises (showrooms and yards), contrary to the requirements of the Traffic Act, Cap 403," he stated.

The directive follows the recently concluded license validation exercise led by NTSA in collaboration with the Directorate of Immigration Department.

This multi-agency effort revealed numerous violations, with dealers across the country holding unregistered vehicles, contrary to the law.

"Through this public notice, the Authority informs all tow truck owners, motor vehicle dealers, both new and secondhand, and repairers of motor vehicles of a multi-agency license revalidation exercise scheduled from November 11 and November 22, 2024," NTSA noted in an earlier advisory.

Additionally, NTSA urged all affected operators to complete the online license revalidation form available on its website by November 6.

The notice added, "All operators are therefore directed to complete and submit an online license revalidation form available on the NTSA Website on or before Wednesday, November 6, 2024."

In light of the violations, law enforcement agencies have been directed to impound vehicles operating without valid driving licenses and those misusing Kenya Dealer Number Plates.

The NTSA’s hard stance aims to ensure compliance with Section 23(1) of the Traffic Act and streamline the motor vehicle sector, which irregularities have long plagued.

With the countdown already underway, motor vehicle dealers now face the pressing urgency of aligning their operations with NTSA’s directives or risking punitive action.
