A groundbreaking coalition, the Fortified Whole Grain Alliance (FWGA), has launched with an ambitious goal of reaching 10 million people across seven African countries by 2025.

The alliance, supported by global organizations like The Rockefeller Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation, aims to combat malnutrition and promote sustainable food systems through fortified whole grains.

The FWGA is a coalition of stakeholders from across the food system, working together to increase the availability of fortified whole grains in low- and middle-income countries.

With active initiatives already underway in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi, the alliance plans to expand its reach to Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, and Egypt.

David Kamau, Managing Director of the Fortified Whole Grain Alliance, highlighted the urgency of their mission.

"The launch of the FWGA marks a crucial step in combating global malnutrition and promoting sustainable food systems,"

"We have set a target of increasing the availability of fortified whole grains in low- and middle-income countries by at least 50 per cent in institutional markets and 25 per cent in consumer markets by 2032."

The alliance's focus on fortified whole grains is a strategic choice. These grains offer significantly higher nutritional value than their refined counterparts, providing essential vitamins, minerals, protein, and fibre.

Additionally, they contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing the need for water, land, fertilizers, and pesticides.

"Together, we are more than just a coalition; we are a beacon of hope," declared Jean Claude Musabyimana, a representative from the Rwandan Ministry of Local Government.

"By working together, we can create a future where fortified whole grains are a staple in every household, ensuring the health and well-being of future generations."

The FWGA's initiative aligns with The Rockefeller Foundation's commitment to building a more equitable and sustainable world.

"By investing in fortified whole grains, we are investing in the health and well-being of future generations – especially people living in vulnerable communities," said Roy Steiner, Senior Vice President for Food at The Rockefeller Foundation.

As the FWGA expands its reach across Africa, it is poised to make a significant impact on public health and development.

By addressing issues like malnutrition and promoting sustainable food systems, the alliance contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to zero hunger and good health and well-being.
