In a dramatic turn of events, President William Ruto has dismissed nearly all of his Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General, retaining only two key figures.

Ruto made the announcement on Thursday afternoon during a press briefing at State House.

According to the president, this unprecedented move aims to streamline government operations and address pressing national issues.

This comes on the heels of mass protests witnessed across the nation recently by the Gen-Z group over the contentious Finance Bill 2024.

They demanded for a raft of changes including the sacking of Cabinet Secretaries they perceived as corrupt or incompetent.

“Recent events that necessitated the withdrawal of the Finance Bill, which will require a review and reorganisation of our budget and fiscal management, have brought us to an inflexion point,” Ruto stated.

Citing Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, Ruto has decided to dismiss all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General, except for the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

“Upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have, in line with the powers given to me by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs,” the Head of State declared.

Ruto also said that during this transitional period, government operations will continue under the guidance of Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials.

The president said he now plans to engage in extensive consultations across various sectors to address debt burdens, expand job opportunities, eliminate wastage, and combat corruption.

However, speculation is rife alluding to the possibility that Ruto may appoint members of the opposition to the cabinet he will constitute next following his recent meeting with Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga.

It remains to be seen whether the nation will witness another handshake or a coalition government but only time will tell.
