In a gesture of solidarity and support, the United States has announced a substantial contribution of Sh130 million to bolster the humanitarian efforts of the Kenya Red Cross in assisting communities grappling with the aftermath of recent flooding.

The announcement came from US Ambassador Meg Whitman, who conveyed her heartfelt sympathy to all families affected by the calamity.

"Today, the U.S. announced Sh130 million in new assistance to support the Kenya Red Cross and its work with communities affected by recent flooding. My heart goes out to all families impacted by the recent devastation," Whitman announced.

Accompanied by the Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Ahmed Idris, Ambassador Whitman made a poignant visit to Mathare, a community profoundly impacted by the floods.

Their visit encompassed a tour of Mradi, Mathare 4A, an area particularly devastated by the recent deluge, underscoring the severity of the situation firsthand.

Additionally, they visited one of the evacuation camps established by the Kenya Red Cross, currently providing refuge to 252 families displaced by the floods.

The injection of new funding pledged by Ambassador Whitman signifies a significant boost to the ongoing humanitarian endeavours of the Kenya Red Cross.

With this financial support, the organization aims to amplify its assistance to communities grappling with the adverse effects of the floods, encompassing a spectrum of relief measures.

Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support extended by the American people through the USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, the Kenya Red Cross highlighted the invaluable contributions in addressing immediate needs such as temporary shelter, settlement requirements, and essential WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Non-Food Items (NFIs).

"We extend our appreciation to the American people through the USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, who have been providing invaluable support for temporary shelter and settlement needs and WASH NFIs, besides the normal emergency programming," stated the Kenya Red Cross.

This assistance complements the organization’s regular emergency programming, further reinforcing the collaborative efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable populations.
